A lush, healthy skin is a blessing. The skin is the largest organ we have and probably the most care with creams and treatments.
The skin is also the organ most exposed to the environment and may suffer from exposure to the elements, especially the sun. The skin is a complex organ with complex functions. The function of the skin is to protect the body.
Women have thinner skin than men for this reason we wrinkle more easily. The skin has three interconnected layers:
Epidermis
This is the outer layer of skin; we show the world and expose more. This layer in turn is composed of other sub layers of most of these cells called keratinocytes. These cells move and eventually reach the outer surface forming a protective barrier layer.
Dermis
This layer is the operational control of the skin. Here are blood vessels, sweat glands, sebaceous glands, nerve endings and collagen and elastin. The dermis nourishes the epidermis. Here begin the pimples and redness due to disruption of traffic or when you blush.
Beauty creams have ingredients that are trying to reach the epidermis but very few succeed because it prevents the skin. The foundation of the dermis is collagen. Collagen is protein that together with elastin creates the basic structure of the skin. The more we collagen our skin firmer.
Hypodermis
It is the subcutaneous layer of the skin, the more profound. It contains mostly fat and blood vessels and nerve endings. It also has collagen and elastin that are connected to the dermis.
It is important to maintain the level of fat in this layer so that our skin is smooth and firm. We tend to lose fat and collagen as time passes.
Collagen
Collagen is a substance that gives firmness and youthful appearance to the skin. As time passes we lose collagen and with it our skin becomes looser and form lines and wrinkles. There is no evidence that collagen creams being absorbed through skin or swallowed to create more collagen. But there are many substances and processes that help develop skin collagen and retinol, laser treatments, peels and other.
