Freckles are increased pigment spots produced by cells called melanocytes, which causes the colored melanin to the skin. Freckles become darker with increasing melanin production, increases caused by exposure to ultraviolet rays (UV). Unlike moles, freckles are flat and rarely larger than the size of a pea.
